Placed in Subphylum Chelicerata, Eurypterids are likely a sister group of Class Arachnida, and are noted for sharing ontogenic (i.e., morphogenesis) traits with modern xiphosurans, the horseshoe crabs (see Carboniferous Horseshoe Crab Fossil Euproops rotundatus). This fossil is a nearly complete specimen of Acutiramus, a pterygotid eurypterid, with its claws folded back towards the body when the animal molted. Note the large eyes and the division of the body into segments, named tergites. Eurypterida: Fossil Record The first eurypterid fossils were discovered in 1818 by S. L. Mitchell in Silurian rocks of New York state. Mitchell mistook the fossil for a catfish, and it was not until 1825 that eurypterids were recognized as a group of arthropods.
